Conscious Thoughts

Conscious leadership, what does it mean and is it relevant to me?

I have been asked on numerous occasions to define what I mean when I refer to “conscious leadership” or what constitutes someone being referred to as a “conscious leader”?  The term has many connotations and varying definitions based on which search engine or information source you utilize. Many organizations and authors have adopted the term and each seems to have a different take on the subject. At Conscious Business Solutions, we start with a simple straight-forward definition which as it is applied grows in complexity and outreach.

It is found in our Vision statement which reads:

“ We operate under the premise that in order to achieve it’s greatest potential, a business must consider and satisfy all of its stakeholders. We consider the stakeholders of any business to be the owners/investors, the employees/team members, the customers, the suppliers, and the community in which it operates or serves. "

A conscious leader must posses a high level of self awareness. An awareness of how everything they do, and how they do it, has a ripple effect throughout their organization, their community, their country, and the world we live in. Every act, every decision,  speaks volume to their values.  To their commitment and to their intentions. These leaders must place a high value in people. They must posses a high level of empathy, of compassion. These leaders must have a strong, deep rooted belief in the work they do, understanding the impact they have in the world. What they do does matter. Size doesn’t matter.  From a small business of one to a company of thousands, we all make an impact everyday. We make an impact on people. The ripple outward from team member, to customer, to supplier, to investor, to community……on it goes. We make an impact on place.  The ripple outward being the environment you create to work in, to shop in, to where you are located, to where you source…..

At Conscious Business Solutions, we have proven success in development of conscious leaders at all levels. Whether you're looking to grow your level of conscious leadership or that of leaders in your company,  we can help. Check out our website for further information on this subject and more at www.cbusinesssolutions.com . We would love to partner with you and your team, give us a call or drop us an email if you feel we can add value to your company.

Conscious Thoughts

Customer Service is a dinosaur . . .

Customer Service is on the brink of extinction. It’s a term that is so over used, so over thought, so misguided that the term has become void of value. So where do we turn from here? How do we  articulate our intentions? How do we measure our relevance? The Customer Experience is the new paradigm, the new measuring stick for how we engage, how we satisfy, and how keep our customers coming back.

The customer experience is measured by an entirely different criteria than customer service. While customer service looks at tangibles such as ease of exchange, speed of interaction, friendliness of staff…the customer experience is measured on the intangibles. It looks at the emotions involved in the interaction. How did I feel about the establishment? What kind of mood did it put me in? Did I really enjoy the visit? Did it make me feel good? If your customer walks away with positive thoughts to these questions it’s very likely you have added to your customer base and they will be back. So how does this all work? In just a few words I think you will see…..

My day begins, as usual, with a warm cup of coffee and the morning paper. I come across an article in the local business section regarding a new bakery that has opened in town. I instantly begin to form expectations around this bakery and what it will be like. I have longed for this day. As a child I have such fond memories of heading down to the corner bakery for our daily bread, many times grabbing a pastry for the walk home as my payment for going. As I close my eyes I recall my senses coming alive as I entered through the door. I recall the sound of the bell on the door as I entered, the smell of the fresh baked goods, the beauty of the way the products were presented, and the joy in the eyes of the owner. The way he treated me as if I was the most important customer he had each day, as I’m sure he made everyone feel. There is the key, how he made me feel. How the abeyance affected me.  How all my senses were stimulated. How it still makes me feel to this day, 40 some odd years later. That is a customer experience…..

Best Year Ever Vol.2

So we are into week three of the new year and the majority of our resolutions, if not all of them, are shot. Why do we do it? Every New Year we have an opportunity to make amends, to change some habits, to start a new. Alas, wishful thinking I guess. I doesn’t have to be that way though. We may not be able to change, but we can alter our habits. Our outlook. Our perspective. All it takes is a little focus. Here are a few thoughts, ten actually, that can and will make a difference. Want to make 2016 your best year ever? Read On.

2016

"Your Best Year Ever"

Conscious Thoughts

  1. “ Look in the mirror, you are beautiful!” -  Forget the stereotypes
society has placed on beauty. Beauty come from within. It’s how
you feel about yourself. Three tips to making yourself feel good
    - Eat well, Sleep well, and Get active. Notice I said eat well, not
diet or lose weight. There is no silver bullet or magic pill when it
comes to the perfect diet. It’s as simple as Michael Pollan put it,
“ Eat food ( unprocessed ). Not too much. Mostly plants. Get
your rest, your body needs it. We all know it, we all have heard it.
Eight hours a night. Give it a try, it will be your fountain of youth.
Get active. Sure, if it suites you you can join a gym or take classes
with a trainer. It doesn’t have to be that hard though. Take a walk,
go for a run, work in the yard. Whatever it is that gets you off the
couch, like Mike, “ just do it”

  2. “Talk to yourself” - No it doesn’t mean you are crazy or delusional.
We all need quiet time with ourselves. No radio, no TV, not even a
book. Just you and yourself discussing life. Time in reflection is a
sort of cleansing of the mind. You will be amazed at what you hear.

  3. “Learn” -  I’m not talking about on-line courses or going back to
school, although those are great ways to grow. I’m talking about
reading books, magazines and articles. All pertaining to subjects
of interest but not necessarily your first choice. Learn a new craft
or take up a hobby.  There is such a refreshing revitalization in
    learning something new.

  4. “Give“ -  Give of yourself, your time, your knowledge, your heart.
You can and will make a difference and an impact in the lives of
    those around you.

  5. “Participate” - Get involved. In your community, a steering committee at work, in your clubs or groups, a recreational sports league… Many takeaways from being a part of something.

  6. “Remember how you got here” - Be proud of what you’ve accomplished, of your success. A word of caution, be wary of success. When success arrives a certain comfort level can set in. Don’t lose sight of what it has taken to get you here, double down and dig in. Continue to focus on all the “little things” that led you here.

  7. “Recharge” - We all need it. Take some time off, unplug. I’m not talking of your annual vacation or weekend getaways, those are important too and should always take place. I’m talking about your daily and weekly time off. The time you take to recharge in the evening and on weekends will lead to exponential productivity throughout your work week.

  8. “Social Connection” - Nothing earth shattering here. The single most important indicator of happiness is one’s social connections. Does not in any way mean you need to be a social butterfly. I’m talking a few “true connections”. Those few individuals, could be a spouse, partner or friend, whom you can share anything with. The kind of person you call when you are really in trouble, who won’t judge you, nor tell you what you want to hear.

  9.  “Love” - Open your heart. Love is important. Be sure that those that you love feel it and hear it. Love your neighbor. Love your fellow human beings. We were made to care, show it.

There you have it, simple steps to make 2016 your best year ever. Being conscious, being aware of the impact we have. The impact on ourselves, our loved ones, our work, our community, our world. It’s pretty amazing. One person can and does make a difference. Approach this next year with focus, intentionality and a new level of consciousness. It will surely be your Best Year Ever!
